The challenge
In July 2022, the government established a review into the mistreatment experienced by LGBT veterans who served in the military before the armed forces’ ban on homosexuality was lifted in 2000. The Cabinet Office commissioned us to design the final report and create an accessible website to publish the findings. Photography was needed for more in-depth case studies of four veterans. We knew this required a thoughtful and sensitive approach to encourage them to share their stories, enabling us to bring real faces to the mistreatment suffered by many.
Our solution
We developed a professionally designed report and a user-friendly website to showcase the experiences of those who served. We interviewed the four veterans to understand their stories and decide a creative approach that would represent them sensitively and respectfully. Our photography team travelled across the country to capture the essence of their lives and homes in a personal, portrait style, helping their personalities shine through and enabling viewers to connect faces to the often harrowing stories revealed in the report.
