Epidemic modelling

We translated scientific expertise into a clear explanation of the science behind pandemic decision-making models.

The challenge

We were asked to create a short video to explain epidemic modelling throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This video forms a valuable repository of information which is owned by the Government Office for Science and used as a resource as part of the COVID-19 Inquiry. The video needed to be clear, straightforward and engaging, to improve understanding of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies and the role of modelling in supporting the inquiry.

Our solution

We combined interview-style pieces to camera with B-roll footage showing the academic environment at the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Mathematical Sciences. Epidemic modelling is complicated, so we created simple motion graphics to break down complexity and display key ideas in a clear and accessible way – showing how models are made, what simulations they can generate and how they can predict the effect of decision-making. The result is an informative video that showcases the expertise and effort involved in developing epidemic models.
